Personaly I would go guard. Well I did go guard. IMHO there's more benifits to the Guard but sometimes you don't have an option b/c of how far or close one or the other may be.

Cool. I will be starting school full time this year and probably doing the guard along with Army ROTC. I'll keep everyone posted on how things go.

this is the single most important reason for going guard. you can SMP and basically guarantee yourself a flight school slot. the trick is finding an aviation unit. but beyond that, go guard. because i can tell from experience (2 guard AVN RGT's under my belt) aviation has little to do with WHAT you know. it's all about WHO you know. any dickhead that passes flight school is called the same thing: army aviatior. (or pain in the ass, if you're in the flight surgeon's office like me). the rest is all about networking. also, since you really want to branch aviation, there's more opportunities, i.e. full-time employment, in the guard then in the reserves. what you need to figure out is, do you wanna go warrant and fly all the time for 20+ years, or do you want to command eventually?

What most people don't understand is that the NG and USAR are, for the most part, identical. One weekend a month and two weeks out of the summer, college benefits, being able to have a 'real' job outside of the military. Whats different about them, NG is state controlled until federally activated and the USAR is controlled totally by the feds. The USAR also offers more job opportunities then does the NG.
so I would recommend you go USAR. You can still do ROTC and all that good stuff!

man, def go guard .. (yes im partial) if you really care that much about being able to do other things and still be military go guard not reserve i have friends in the reserve that have to travel a hella long way to drill when i go 5 miles down the road to do mine ... dont get me wrong tho, there are ppl in the guard that do the same thing . however it is usually b/c they want to stay with the same unit if they move away or b/c they are waiting on an interstate transfer or just a transfer to another unit (have some medics in my section that did both)

There's a lot of kickers to joining the guard though. You mention school ... the guard can draw from two pots of money, where as the fed's only give you fed tution assit. and that's it. In the guard I can use all my guard money which in DE is 100%, plus I can pull from the fed pot if I deceide to go out of state. Plus the GI bill and all that non sense. And one of the big things for me is, there is NO Signal units in MD, except the 311th and there battalions and most of them just moved to Hawaii.

actually in USAR you have the Tuition Assistance and the GI Bill. As far as the units...Chances are you will have a better shot at getting a job in the USAR then in the NG. I know here in KY the majority of the units are all combat arms units, most people are wanting the supporter rolls so the USAR is the better match for them. If really just depends on YOUR preference.

The guard get's to the GI Bill as well. Like you where saying I think it depends on your state though when it comes to jobs. In DE, MD, and PA most of the state jobs are all NG.

but it really just comes down to what the preferences of a person are. each service has a specific purpose; but yet we are all doing the same thing....defending this great nation of ours!! :)

I'm about 99% sure I'm going into the Guard after I move to Alabama in May. Thanks for all your input!
