I'm sure someone will let me know if this is in the wrong place...but here we go...
So I'm an admissions officer for a college that offers degrees from Certificates to Masters degrees... It's a private college with online classes that allow you to build your own schedule and caters to working adults. They are very flexible with military students. The best part is...it's free to active duty military personnel. My husband is a current student and actually doesn't mind his classes. ;) It's a good deal, use the TA you get anyway, get their Military Scholarship, and you can still use your GI Bill for the extra cash. Use your military transcripts for college credits. Want more details? Email me at mellisa.brown@strayer.edu. Just put PDL - mp.c in the subject. Get the degree for free while you can!

You are awesome!!!!
Anyways....since I am over here with no ed-center, I had a few ?'s I thought you may be able to help me clear up, since you seem to be familiar with this stuff.
1. Can my wife do this too?
2. Can we collect on the GI bill while still active duty, and if so, how?
3. Can we now USE the GI bill for our spouses?
4. What would you need from me for this? I have a transcript from my ilitary stuff (most of it), and a criminal justice class I took through central Texas College. I never received the documentation on that class.
any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. I plan on joining the CIA one day, and need to complete at least my Associates for that. I was thinking of persuing my Masters in Public Admin. That, with my intelligence training and such in the military should help me get there.
Thank you again.

Anyways....since I am over here with no ed-center, I had a few ?'s I thought you may be able to help me clear up, since you seem to be familiar with this stuff.
1. Can my wife do this too? Yes, your wife can do the classes, but we don't have scholarships for spouses. We DO have financial aid available. All she needs is a high school diploma or GED at a minimum.
2. Can we collect on the GI bill while still active duty, and if so, how? Yes, you can collect the GI bill while on active duty and while collecting TA. You would complete the aplication which you can find at http://www.gibill.va.gov. It takes a few months for payments to start, but they will retro pay back to when you applied.
3. Can we now USE the GI bill for our spouses? I know that there are accounts "set up" for spouses, but they usually don't have any money in them. You would want to contact your VA rep (info found on the same website as above).
4. What would you need from me for this? I have a transcript from my ilitary stuff (most of it), and a criminal justice class I took through central Texas College. I never received the documentation on that class.I would need a copy of your LES (so I can waive your application fee - a savings of $50) and either a copy of your diploma or GED or a signed attestaton that I could send you. I can request your official military transcript (with your signature) and I can do the same for any college that you have attended. The only other things to do are to choose your classes and get your TA approved. (Done via the internet for Army, and paper versions for the other branches.) TA forms can be faxed or emailed to your ED office if need be.
any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. I plan on joining the CIA one day, and need to complete at least my Associates for that. I was thinking of persuing my Masters in Public Admin. That, with my intelligence training and such in the military should help me get there.
If you want to eventually get the MPA, I would suggest starting with the Bachelor of Business Administration. It will ensure all of your prerequisites are met for the MPA when you get to that point.
Thank you again.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions, I'm always happy to asnwer them. Army students have a slightly different process because of the whole goarmyed thing, but I can walk you through all that.

If you can give me and address, I believe I have most of that here. I will print my LES, I have one transcript, and I will send a copy of my diploma. Also, my credit hours with Central Texas College need to be obtained somehow.
My wife has her GED. If I can get TA, as well as my GI bill money, and register as a "ful time" student, than I should be able to cover any differences in cost left after the scholarships and financial aid between us. Do you know where I go online for TA?

I would prefer that you call me or email me your info before you put in your app for TA in the Army. That way I can make sure I am the one helping you get registered and you aren''t assigned to a different Admissions Officer. If you want to get started quicker, I understand and you can go to http://www.goarmyed.com and complete the process.

For undergraduate classes, your scholarship and TA will cover 100% of classes for you to be a part time student (which will still allow you to receive your GI Bill). To be a full time student, you would have an out of pocket of about $530 per quarter which you can pay in monthly payments, or you can apply for Financial Aid to pay for it. For your wife, if she is eligible for the Pell Grant, she will be able to use that with the Federal Student loans and not have an out of pocket for tuition as a part time student either. Then the GI bill money can be set aside to pay back her student loans later, or used for other expenses as needed while you are in school. Federal loans are great because you don't start paying them back until 6 months after you stop taking classes. They are also usually very low interest.
I will E-mail you once I am setteled in GA This sounds too good to pass up

Small correction to my previous answer: Active duty Army can take full time classes without an out of pocket for tuition. All the other branches would have the balance for full time, but can get 100% of their tution covered for part time.

Part time is one or two classes at a time. Full time would be three classes per quarter. It would be the same requirement for full and part time for all branches.

So, the official ruling on this matter is if you are Active Duty. That means if you have orders that activate you, you qualify for all the same stuff. If not, then the best I can do is waive your $50 application fee (with an LES) and help you apply for financial aid. Also, if you qualify for the GI Bill, you can still use that. Sorry, I am trying to push for a policy change, but I don't have much say in the matter at this point. But I will tell you that even if you use Financial Aid, the education is definitely worth it.

I wil be emailing you a copy of my diploma as well as my transcript tonight if I can get it scanned in. That way we can get things rolling for me. I am still trying to access the site for the GI bill. It was not working the other day when I tried. I will try and get that application put together ASAP as well. And my intentions are to try and do full time. On average, how many hours per week will that entail? I need to make sure I am not overindulging myself over here.
I'm not sure which of my credits will work for my Business degree, but I'm sure you will be able to sort that out. I have attended various military training classes, as well as the one that was through CTC (Vice and Narcotics Investigation). the transcript I have is for 21 credit hours, but as I stated, I am not sure which will actually be able to count towards my degree. I will let you be the one to help me set up for TA as you request. This would be much easier on me anyways, due to the fact that I don't have an Ed Center here.

I don't have anything in Criminal Justice. I have a Bachelor of Business Admin in Legal Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems in Homeland Security and information systems. If you are interested in either of those, you essentially set your own schedule with my school so you never need to worry about what time you are getting out of work.

Ahh, but that is the joy in online classes, you can do it at off hours when you have time. Even if you are not currently AD, then we still have financial aid available. You only need to take 2 classes at a time to qualify for financial aid, and with undergraduate classes you are looking at maybe 2 - 3 hours a week per class.

That's because Phoenix works on a 5 week session, so you have to do twice the work in half the time. Strayer is on an 11 week quarter, so you have more than twice the amount of time to get your work done in.

Sorry for the huge wait for a response. I've been out of comission for a couple months getting settled into the new place. My husband is in Korea now, so it's taken some adjustments! Anyway, to answer your question...it works basically the same for reservists, but you need to have authorization from your command first. It's something you want to check on ahead of time though. I had a friend that was in th NG. He was told by his 1st Sgt that he could do it and get TA, but when it came time for him to go through with it, he got the run around because they didn't know what unit he officially belonged to and who would be paying for it. Otherwise, there is always the financial aid option.

Another quarter has started and we are moving on to the Winter classes. They will be starting in January. In case anyone is interested, my email is mellisa.brown@strayer.edu. I check it pretty much all hours, even if I'm not in the office, so I'm available to help when you need it regardless of your time zone. If you have specific questions, I can even provide you with a cell number if you need help outside of office hours.

I've signed up with U. of Phoenix for now, their IT program is pretty flexible.

Congrats. I know a lot of people who have liked them. I know a lot of people who feel it is a little too rushed. Let me know how it works out for you!

Cool! We just got our next duty station. We'll be moving to Texas in June (Ft Hood). I'll still be working for Strayer though. We don't have a campus there YET. I'm working on it though.
Anyone in the Ft Hood area that knows someone that would be interested if there was a campus there, let me know. The more interest I can show in the area, the more like I am to get the push through for an actual facility.

Strayer runs a great program for us military guys to be able to work and get our degrees at the same time...

It was just officially announced today that all branches of the mililtary are now eligble for the same deal that Strayer negotiated with the Army. Now all active duty military can take full time classes and the only thing they will need to pay for will be books! There are still 3 weeks before classes, so if anyone is interested, there is plenty of time to get enrolled for the Spring Quarter starting in April.
